New producer price will motivate us to work harder ; cocoa farmers tell government with gratitude

Cocoa farmers in Ghana have expressed profound gratitude to Cocoa Board and for that matter government for increasing the producer price of cocoa.

Farmers in the Ashanti Region were full of joy and have commended government for keeping it’s promise by giving them 70 percent of the world market price of cocoa.

At a meeting with some National Executives of Farmers in Kumasi where local farmers were represented from all the districts in the Ashanti Region ,the National Chief Farmer Alhaji Alhasan Bukari reminded the people that the association exists to serve the interest of farmers and not to play politics.

He was quick to note that it would just be fair to give credit where credit is due and so any regime which priorities the welfare of farmers, they would also not hesitate to give it the needed commendation and support.

“Despite the 70 percent being given to farmers, the government has not relented on it’s efforts to give us inputs such as fertilizer, torchlight, free spraying among other things; it is unprecedented in the life of the Ghanaian cocoa Farmer that a government would give about 70 percent of world producer price of cocoa to it’s farmers ” Alhaji Alhasan stated.

The National Chief Farmer said this has come to motivate them to work extra hard so as to maintain Ghana’s position as the second largest producer of cocoa or recapture the first position globally.
He however admonished local Chief Farmers to ensure transparency and equity when ever any thing is sent to farmers by way of motivation.

  1. Some other farmers who spoke to the media intimated that it would rather be unfair to compare prices of Cote D’Ivoire and that Ghana since their counterparts in that country do not enjoy the kind of free inputs they enjoy here in Ghana.
They also urged the youth to venture into farming instead destroy lands and water bodies in the name of galamsey.
