The Nkawie Forest District has consistently more than doubled its targets for the Green Ghana exercise since the project began three years ago.
The innovative nationwide tree planting exercise was established with the aim of planting more trees for the purposes of afforestation to ensure reduction of carbon emissions in tackling global climate crisis among other things.
This year for instance management of the forest district had a target of planting 350 thousand trees but ended up planting over 664 thousand seedlings.
This was disclosed to the media in an interaction with the District Forest Manager Mr Chrisantus Nifaasoyir at Nkawie in the Ashanti region.
He said over 400 thousand of the seedlings were targeted at some degraded areas of the Nkawie District Forest reserves while more than 200 thousand were given to farmers, institutions and some other individuals for planting.
Some of the species planted include mahogany, acacia, Coconut, palm trees, Afram, tick among others.
Mr. Nifaasoyir was excited about the enthusiasm with which the people greeted the exercise and admonished them to own and nurture the trees for their own benefits and that of the general public.
” We are not in competition with any other district; rather, what is more important is to plant and take good care of the trees ” he stated.
He was optimistic that the survival rate of the trees for this year would be higher than that of last year which was around 75percent.
It would be recalled that the Nkawie Forest District under the administration of Mr Chrisantus Nifaasoyir was adjudged the highest tree planting district in the Ashanti region for the year 2022 under the green Ghana project.
